| 1. How can you tell if your female chinchilla is pregnant?
top

It is really hard to tell if your female is pregnant until it is almost time for delivery. The surest way to tell is by feeling for her nipples. Normally they are just a small bump and practically impossible to find. During the last few weeks of pregnancy they will begin to grow until they are almost as long as her hair. To feel the nipples hold her up with her belly away from you. Start at her "arm pit" and run your palm straight down. If you can feel very thin long nipples you will know that your female is pregnant. If you don't find any it may be that she is just not that far along yet. Chinchillas do not make nests, but they can become more hateful when pregnant.

| 3. How do u know when your chinchilla is sexually mature?

Chinchillas can become sexually mature as early as 3-4 months old, however, it is not safe to let them breed then. A female should be at least 8 months old before you put her in a cage with a male(*see below). By this age she should be fully grown and large enough to safely deliver babies. We recommend waiting until a male is around 5-6 months old before placing him into breeding.
Younger females may not be large enough and a c-section may be needed to deliver the kits. This will be very costly and the difficult delivery could cause the death of mother and/or babies.
*Mutation colors such as Violet, Ebony, Black Velvet, and Sapphire tend to grow more slowly than other colors. It could take as much as a year and a half before females are large enough to safely breed.

| 4. What is the least stressful way to wean a 10 week old male chinchilla from his family(mom, aunt and two younger male cousins)? I tried moving him to adifferent cage, but he was very anxious.

One idea is to place his new cage side by side with his mother's so they can still see and smell each other. Sometimes a small stuffed animal in the cage can also help but it is very important that you watch closely to be sure the chinchilla is not chewing on it. If your chinchilla ingests the material he could get very sick. Be sure he has a box or other small space to hide in to help him feel more secure. Its also a good idea to spend a lot of time with a weaned baby. This is the best time to get him very tame. Monitor his food and water intake closely over the first week to be sure he is thriving without his mother. At 10 weeks of age he should no longer be nursing but he could stop eating from depression. This is rare but it does happen.
